Durango Hunting Trips | Fishing Trips and Horseback Trips
Colorado Wilderness Outfitters provides guided wilderness hunting trips on public land in Southwest Colorado. All hunts are conducted under state and federal permits and accessed by horseback into remote terrain within the San Juan Mountains.
Our hunting program is built around multi-day trips, established backcountry camps, and realistic expectations for physical effort, terrain, and opportunity. Seasons, methods, and availability are dictated by Colorado Parks and Wildlife regulations and wilderness use requirements.
We offer guided hunts using the following legal methods, depending on season and license availability:
Guided wilderness rifle hunts conducted during state regulated seasons. These hunts are typically the most accessible option and take place on public land from horseback-accessed backcountry camps.
Early season wilderness hunts that require advance planning through the Colorado draw system. Archery hunts emphasize close-range encounters, patience, and extended time hunting on foot
Draw-only wilderness hunts conducted during limited muzzleloader seasons. These hunts require careful positioning and shot selection and are based out of our remote backcountry camps.
Elk hunting is the core of our hunting program. Most clients book rifle elk hunts during over-the-counter seasons, while archery and muzzleloader elk hunts require advance planning through the draw process.
In addition to elk, Colorado Wilderness Outfitters offers limited guided opportunities for other Colorado big game species. These hunts vary significantly in terrain, physical demand, and licensing difficulty.
Because these species require draw-only licenses and long-term planning, availability is limited and subject to change.
For experienced hunters looking for a self-guided wilderness experience, we offer drop camps during select seasons. Drop camps include stock-supported access and camp setup, while hunting is conducted independently.
All guided hunts operate from established backcountry camps accessed by horseback. Camps are designed for function and comfort within wilderness regulations and typically include communal areas and separate guest sleeping tents.
Horseback travel is an essential part of accessing hunting areas. No prior riding experience is required, and ride times are planned to balance access with guest comfort whenever possible.
Wilderness hunting is physically demanding by nature. Terrain may include steep slopes, variable footing, and changing weather conditions. Daily effort varies by species, season, and conditions.
We focus on setting clear expectations before booking so clients understand what the hunt involves.
All hunts operate within Colorado’s regulated seasons. Some licenses are available over the counter, while others require participation in the draw system and advance planning.
Pricing varies by species, hunt method, season, and trip length. Final pricing and availability are confirmed through direct conversation to ensure the hunt is a good fit.
